Plenty of choices for road food along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) south of San Francisco, but if you take a quick detour into the towns of Half Moon Bay or Pescadero you will get some of the best of what this little microclimate has to offer - oysters, Dungeness crab, artichokes and serious cocktails.
At Duarte’s Tavern in Pescadero we split an order of fried oysters (left) before hitting up the artichoke soup. On our way back to the city to watch the 49ers lose the NFC title game to the Giants, we stopped at the bar at the San Benito Hotel in Half Moon Bay for brunch. They have a sign in the window that says they make the best Bloody Mary (right). Unlike most signs that make that claim, this one was not lying!
